Dr. Benjamin Stands was one of the first pediatricians in Columbia. After training at Duke University, he came here to practice pediatrics in 1948. He founded Medical Park Pediatrics and Adolescence in 1977, opening the original office downtown close to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Stands’ special interest in adolescent healthcare has continued to shape the practice today as we follow our patients from birth through college.
Dr. Stands was joined in 1975 by Dr. John Rider who continues to practice pediatrics in Columbia with our partner group, Carolina Pediatrics. Dr. Dennis Cohen joined the group just two days later and practiced until 2007 when he retired and the Lexington office was closed. Dr. Doug Luberoff later joined the practice followed by Dr. Cheatham and Dr. Susan Breeland (now Dr. Susan Luberoff). Dr’s. Doug and Susan Luberoff continue to practice pediatrics in Lexington and Columbia respectively.
In 1988 when Dr. Stands was ready to retire, Dr. Susan Claytor was hired to take over his practice. She is board certified in Pediatrics and has practiced in NE Columbia for more than 20 years. Her most current partner is Dr. Randall Colby who has been in practice in Columbia for more than 10 years and is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Genetics.
It is our mission to provide excellent pediatric and adolescent care to the children and teenagers of northeast Columbia and the surrounding areas. Some of our special interests include preventive healthcare, acute illness, genetic disorders, allergies, eczema, asthma, ADHD and adolescent medicine.
